DIGITAL CAMERAS
Digital cameras now far outsell film cameras, so with any luck you
won't often need a scanner, especially if you shoot your own pictures.
The resolution of a digital camera is measured in mega pixels, with
3 mega pixels being the current entry level and 5 mega pixels becoming
the norm. You don't actually need the highest resolution for desktop
publishing, especially as large files are difficult to store and
manipulate, but there is an advantage in having 5 mega pixel images
if you intend to crop parts from larger pictures and want them to
remain sharp.
The simple cameras built into palmtops and mobile
phones are not really suitable for desktop publishing unless you're
producing news stories where any sort of picture is better than
nothing. You'll need to spend £100 or more on a separate camera,
which should have an optical (not digital) zoom facility and removable
memory cards for storing images. It's also convenient to have a
memory card reader, costing only a few pounds, to handle the transfer
