In their search for an edge, certain printer manufacturers
have violated the historical patterns that this web section
has described. For example, one manufacturer's printer scans
the font buttons of the front panel while on-line. If you
push one of the buttons, the font changes immediately without
the printer going off-line, without the PC's permission
or control, and perhaps just because someone leaned on the
printer or brushed it with his arm. To experienced printer
users, this would look like a hardware problem with the
printer not a feature.

Other printer manufacturers are extending the font selection
concept to whether the PC or printer is in ultimate control
of the fonts used. Currently, the front panel buttons are
submissive to the PC software. If the PC software tells
the printer to change fonts, it does so even if the front
panel font selection is different. In perhaps a vain attempt
at equality, certain manufacturers are starting to allow
fonts to be set two ways: permanently or temporarily. Temporarily
means that PC software can override the printer. Permanently
means that the printer will ignore all PC software font-changing
instructions. To the experienced printer user, this would
look like a PC software configuration problem at first not
a feature.

Finally, some printer manufacturers are including built-in
forms. You can select different forms from the front panel.
The idea behind this feature is to reduce the need for a
second paper tray. Instead of using PC software to select
letterhead from the second paper tray, select a form that
is in the printer a form that has your company's letterhead
on it. Then, the letterhead graphics data does not need
to be transmitted each time, and you can print the rest
of the letter at traditional character-mode speeds.
