The business HP-PCL laser is the standard character laser
printer category where printers typically print between
8 ppm and 10 ppm. The current market leader in this category
is the HP LaserJet II. This old model is due for revision
shortly because both the IIp and IId have better printer
ROM soft-ware. Street prices are around 51,600. The major
competition recently has been the Panasonic KXP4450, which
prints at around 11 ppm .
Recently, IBM has released a new laser printer (the LaserPrinter)
that looks like a winner. The LaserPrinter should
not be confused with the IBM Personal PagePrinter (not recommended),
a PostScript printer.
Judging by the reviews of these high-speed shared lasers,
the speeds don't seem high enough (20 ppm) to justify the
price . For the same price, 10 HP LaserJet Its
with an aggregate speed of 80 ppm could be purchased.
Don't consider a PostScript printer unless it supports
the 35 fonts found in the AppleLaser Writer II NT.
