Printer Considering Replacement Supplies
Supplier
Laser printers are like gasoline engines.
They need constant attention and are a source of tension.
These are the disposable devices you need to keep laser printers
running:
* Toner cartridges
* Light-sensitive drum or optical photo conductor (OPC)
* Developer
* Fuser
* Ozone filters
* Cleaning devices
Not all laser printers need all of these items. Some laser
printers combine everything into one printer cartridge, typically
called a toner cartridge. Most magazines assume that the convenience
of everything in one printer cartridge costs more. After studying
the manufacturer's maintenance specifications and list prices,
this proves to be false. Print engines that use disposable
cartridges are cheaper.
The costs of laser replacement supplies were computed for
each ream (500 sheets) of paper. The costs ranged from $20
per ream to $34 per ream. There were no differences per ream
price between laser, LED, and LCS printer engines. The pricing
of these replacement supplies could be studied because different
manufacturers used the same printer engines. Prices varied
from $24 to $31 per ream for the same engine. Obviously, shopping
around for laser replacement supplies is worthwhile.
Another factor that should influence your purchasing decision
is how popular the print engine is. At the time of this printing,
the most popular print engine is the Canon SX. Versions of
it were used in the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet II and the Apple
LaserWriter II series. Because of its popularity, the list
price of the cartridge is $129. Third-party vendors discount
the same new Cannon SX engine cartridge to $79. Used cartridges
are available for $59. This engine has one of the best-looking
outputs, as well as the most convenient and cheapest replaceable
supplies. The total replacement supply costs drop from $23
per ream at list price, to $18 if discounted originals are
used, to $15 for refilled/rebuilt cartridges. Squid inkjets : Because a ream of paper costs $12 and the disposables
cost from $15 to $34 per ream, your time is better spent saving
toner not paper. Most laser printers have a print density
dial. Keep the dial on low until you print the final draft.
Re-usable toner printer cartridges can save thousands of
dollars. The trick to using them is to find a reputable manufacturer.
It takes little money to set up a mail-order business refilling
toner printer cartridges for laser printers. Some companies
are saving money by doing this in-house. The simplest method
of squeezing more life out of the toner cartridge is called
"drill and fill." Drill a hole, empty out the spent
toner, and fill the cartridge with new toner.
The market has matured enough that most refillers are doing
much more than this simple cartridge-refilling procedure today.
A good cartridge remanufacturer completely disassembles the
cartridge, inspects each part for wear, performs any necessary
repairs, cleans all parts and inner surfaces, lubricates the
pieces, and recoats the photosensitive drum. Good used printer
cartridges can produce better-looking documents than the original.
Good refill companies can extend the cartridge life almost
indefinitely. Squid inkjets : You can tell when a used toner printer cartridge comes
from a fly-by-night company: occasional black streaks may
appear on your paper, printing may be extremely light or extremely
dark, and toner may leak inside the printer. If any of these
things occur, you should find another company that reconditions
used cartridges.
Rumors have been floating around about toner printer cartridges
that may actually damage the printer or self-destruct after
the first use. Not many people worry about this anymore. Certain
companies wanted to prevent rebuilt cartridges. Whether these
rumors were started by engineers to protect their print engines
or by MBAs to control the market and make more money is uncertain.
The rumors all mention an abrasive particle or corrosive chemical
that is released when the toner is almost gone. The chemical
or particle is supposed to destroy the cartridge and possibly
leak out and damage the print engine. To combat these rumors,
the more reputable toner rebuilders offer a type of service
deal similar to the following example:
Send us a brand new cartridge. Let us check it out to remove
the abrasives and corrosive chemicals. Then, let us track
your toner printer cartridge's history and determine when
it is too old to be rebuilt any more. Rumors are circulating
that envelopes damage cartridges and therefore the cartridges
should not be rebuilt if they were used to print envelopes.
Note which cartridges you use when you print envelopes. Find
out for yourself whether this rumor is true.
Let your toner cartridge cool down before you throw it away.
Otherwise, it may melt holes in your plastic trash cans.If
a printer does not use a cartridge that includes all of the
replaceable sup-plies, you must learn more procedures, figure
out more containers, and possibly break more things. The human
mind is capable of comprehending only a certain number of
buttons and gadgets. Don't make things harder than they have
to be by purchasing a printer with a complicated toner system.
Also, there are practical reasons for discouraging the purchase
of laser printers without cartridges. Most lasers with separate
toner bins and OPCs have the problem of accidental toner spills.
Toner spills are a mess; you will need a special vacuum cleaner
to pick up this fine dust. Even worse than the spill problem
is that the OPC is often exposed to light; this may happen
if you tear off the front panel to change the toner or to
clear a paper jam. The OPC then stops attracting toner, and
white spots appear. Trained service personnel usually must
adjust laser printers without toner cartridges. This means
an additional cost of unavoidable on-site service. The best
copier machines are heading toward the use of cartridges. Squid inkjets : Dim the lights in the room and pull the curtains when
working
on a laser printer. Sunlight can damage the OPC drum.
If successive cartridges print too light or too dark and the
knob that adjusts how much toner is dispensed does not seem
to have any effect, try this tip. Each toner cartridge has
plastic holes or knobs that trip some microswitches in the
lid of the laser printer. These switches communicate to the
laser engine how sensitive the OPC drum is. Usually, you must
order spare parts and replace these switches if they become
jammed, dirty, or broken. Occasionally, the bristles of a
comb, super glue, and a dab of duct tape will put the printer
back together.
Trelined service personnel means someone with a great deal
of manual dexterity, patience, and practice. It also is helpful
if they know proprietary secret procedures. In any case, it
is always worthwhile to hover about two inches over the shoulders
of these trained service professionals. Be sure to ask them
many pesky questions while they are working you may learn
something and save your company money.
