Printer Engine Model
A laser printer's engine model is important for several
reasons. First, many manufacturers use the same engine.
This means that the engines share similar features (toner
cartridges, for example), as well as similar problems. For
example, Ricoh engines use a white-writer technology like
copier machines and fax machines. This technology moves
the laser over the area that is to remain white. Most other
laser printers use their laser to draw where it wants toner
to be placed. Because laser beams are not square, the black-writer
lasers draw different-shaped dots than white-writer lasers.
Black-writer laser dots tend to bloom, while white-writer
lasers tend to pinch out the black areas. This means that
lines will be narrower when printed on white-writer lasers,
and fonts have to be redesigned. Obviously, picking a minority
engine where everything is slightly different is not a good
idea. Picking an engine is the first important step when
purchasing a printer. The Cannon SX is the most popular
model at the moment and also is the best.
These are some example model numbers of laser engines:
Canon LBP-SX, Toshiba A-739, Casio LCS 130, Canon SX, Ricoh
4081, Fujitsu, Ricoh LP-1060, NEC LC 800, Canon TX, Minolta
SP 140. Some of these companies are coming out with laser
printers of their own. You would think that the laser engine
company would know the engine so well that it would be able
to design the computer part to take advantage of some "secret
features" that were not revealed to other companies.
Sadly, there are no "secret features."
