Different laser engines come with the capability to insert
one, two, or three font cartridges. Because the size of
these cartridges varies, it really does not matter how many
cartridge slots there are. Fonts that fit on one cartridge
range from 4 to 300 fonts. Probably more important is how
much the font cartridges cost and the availability of these
cartridges.
Because the printer manufacturers control the contents
of the font cartridges, it is possible for them to develop
a monopoly by controlling the design of the cartridges.
Therefore, it is important to purchase a laser printer that
is popular enough that other companies are selling cartridges
for the same printer. Competition lowers prices.
