Front panel controls and lights are often a hit cryptic,
but this should not influence a purchasing decision. Usually,
only a few people ever learn what the buttons and lights
mean. Apple LaserWriters have the simplest front panel,
with just four LED indicator lights. Below the lights are
icons that indicate what the lights do. The meanings of
these icons are not clear.
Laser printers can blink their lights in the following
cases: when warming up, when receiving a document, when
thinking about the document, when ready, when paper is moving,
when paper is jammed, or when a partial page is present
but not enough data is there to warrant printing a full
page.
When the Macintosh is printing, a box appears on-screen
with a message that says the current status is "Processing
Job." The screen flickers about every five seconds.
Do not panic; nothing is wrong. You will see a small clock
or some symbol on-screen that indicates all is alive and
well.
Laser printers can weigh from 38 lbs. to 174 lbs. Even
the 38-lb. printer is heavy enough to require two people
to move it. Shipping something so heavy and so fragile long
distances should be done with care. Always save the original
carton that the printer came in. When moving, put the printer
on a car seat not the floor or the bed of a pickup (the
floor vibrates too much). Treat it gently like a hard disk.
