Printer Locating Ports, Data Cables,
and Power Cords
In dot-matrix printers, the location of the power and printer
cables is important. Traditionally, the power and data cables
come out the back of the printer. The fanfold tractor paper
has to be pulled around and through these cables to get
into the printer. It is a constant battle to arrange the
cables and paper so that they don't fight each other.
Some laser and inkjet cartridges printer companies actually mount the power and data
cables on the side of the printer. This is almost always
good if the cables are on the side closest to the PC and
power outlet. If the PC is on the other side, it is in some
cases worse. Again, another no-win situation.
Many companies make wire or plastic stands for the printer
to sit in that are attractive and effective at keeping the
paper and cables separate. Some printer companies are starting
to include fold-out legs on the bottom of the printer that
serve the same purpose and save you the $40 cost of one
of these stands.
Dot-matrix printers also have dip switches. The most common
place for them today is underneath the print head. The print
head needs to be moved to one side. Sometimes a metal lid
or plastic lid covers the switches, but usually these switches
are easy to get to.
