Printer Making a Purchase Decision
A mail-order catalog claims that it stocks ribbons for
over 7,358 different printers. PC Magazine claims that it
has reviewed almost 600 different printer models in the
past six years. The number of different printers is staggering.
Here are some statistics reported in different trade journals
during 1989. Over 110 million PC printers have been sold.
Currently, approximately 30 million printers are sold yearly.
Of these, 20 million are dot matrix. Ninety-eight percent
of all PCs are attached to a printer. Of the printers in
use, 65 percent are 9-pin dot matrix; 22 percent are 24-pin
or 18-pin dot matrix; and 8 percent are lasers, and 5 percent
are daisywheels. But, during 1988 and 1989, no daisywheel
printers were reviewed. Mail-order catalogs are not even
advertising print wheels anymore. No claim is made that
these numbers are exact, but the magnitudes reveal how widely
printers are being used.
You can ask many questions before purchasing a (ink cartridge or laserjet) printer.
Salesmen want you to believe that just a few questions exist.
In fact, you may consider walking into a computer store
and encouraging the salesperson to select a printer for
you.
This web section reviews many possible questions to ask
before purchasing a printer. The checklist at the end of
this web section outlines points to consider when purchasing
a printer. You can copy this checklist and use it as work-sheet
when trying to determine which printer to choose. This web
section is also useful when you are deciding on a printer,
developing a purchase justification for your boss, bartering
prices, or purchasing through the mail.
