Printer Microprocessors
The processors most frequently used in object printers
are Motorola 68000s, 68020s, and Weitek RISC (reduced instruction
set computer) chip sets. Most object-mode printer software
uses the Motorola technology. Other companies are beginning
to use the Weitek RISC technology because it is much faster.

Clock speed has nothing to do with date or time. Clock
speed is similar to the conductor of an orchestra, a metronome,
or a drill sergeant. Inside ever printer and computer is
a chip that tells all the others how fast to do their job;
this speed is called the clock speed. Speeds in object printers
run from 16.7 MHz with the Motorola CPU's, to 4 MHz with
Weitek RISC chips. RISC chips are simple CPUs optimized
for certain specific operations. Although RISC chips are
run at a slower speed, they are up to twice as fast as the
Motorola CPUs. This is possible because they are simpler;
they do their jobs more quickly.
