Printer Object Mode
PostScript printers need a great deal of memory and CPU
horsepower. The faster they print the better. Specialized
hardware is being developed to make the PostScript printers
do their jobs faster. One PostScript printer may take half
as long to print a page as another PostScript printer. The
technology is advancing rapidly.
You can add PostScript features to certain printer models
by purchasing a new printer computer for the laser engine.
The new printer computer can be housed inside the PC or
can replace the current computer inside the laser printer.
If placed inside the PC, the printer computer takes up a
slot but can communicate with the PC motherboard at bus
speeds. The printer computer placed in a slot inside the
PC interfaces with application programs in two different
ways. Either the board uses a driver and installs itself
as a parallel printer port (to the operating system), or
the board comes with software that teaches certain PC programs
how to talk to it directly. The latter method may be a faster
but less stable platform for your company. Certain PC programs
may change versions in such a way that the new board cannot
be used any more. Boards that install themselves as parallel
printer ports need only a driver update if PC DOS versions
change significantly.
