Paper Weight, Thickness, and Smoothness
Printer Paper Weight, Thickness,
and Smoothness
Paper weight refers to how heavy or stiff
the paper is. Weight is measured in pounds. A typical laser
engine can accept 16 lbs. to 24 lbs. of paper. The range is
16 lbs. or 17 lbs. to 36 lbs. Paper weight is measured according
to how much it actually weighs on a scale due to gravity.
The international measurement of paper weight is grams per
square meter. 16 lbs. is equal to 60 grams per square meter.
The thickness of paper is technically called the caliper of
paper. The thickness is measured in thousandths of an inch
or millimeters. Most engines can use paper between 3.7mm and
7.5mm.
Paper can be too smooth or too rough. Most
of the expensive bond paper or water-stamped paper is too
rough. Smoothness is measured on a Sheffield scale. Typical
laser printers support paper between 100 and 300 on the Sheffield
scale.
Squid Inkjets : Laser printers will print on the cheapest
copy machine paper available. But, when the humidity is high,
pieces of paper stick together. To prevent this, paper manufacturers
put powder between the sheets. The heavier the paper (and
therefore more expensive), the more dust accumulates. The
more dust there is, the more uneven the paper surface becomes,
because the dust tends to stick and create ridges. The more
uneven the paper, the poorer the image. Cheap paper costs
between S2 and $4 per bundle of 500 sheets. A bundle of 500
sheets is called a ream. Ideally, the ream is packaged in
polvlaminated moisture-proof wrap. A ream of special laser
paper, Hammer-mill laser stock, is discounted to about S5
a ream.
Paper also has wax pick measurements that
determine the strength of the paper's surface. Cheap paper
can leave lint inside your printer, ruining print quality
and shortening the engine's life.
