A plotter's speed is measured in how many inches per second
it can move the pen. But, most plotters need to be slowed
down, because if the pen is moved too fast, the ink does
not have time to flow evenly, and the line looks terrible.
Normally, everyone learns to be patient with plotters. Fast
plotters move the pen at 32 inches per second; average plotters
move the pen at 15 to 20 inches per second.
Plotter resolution is measured by drawing a staircase and
measuring the number of stairs to climb the diagonal of
an inch by inch square. The more steps, the higher the resolution
of the motors moving the paper and pen. The eye perceives
a large difference between 200 steps per inch and 1,000
steps per inch. The actual statistic is reported as .05
or .001 inch per step, respectively.
Plotters can draw on many different types of paper, vellum,
film, and acetate. Special pens and pencils that can draw
on these surfaces are available. The better plotters have
a wide assortment of pens. The most popular plotters have
pens available from other companies. Look at the plotter
pens listed in an INMAC or MOORE catalog the plotters for
these pens are the most popular and have the widest selection
of pens at the best prices.
