Printer Resolution
Laser printer resolution is almost universally 300 dpi.
Some 400-dpi lasers are available, and 600 dpi exists. It
looks like 600 dpi is the maximum possible out of a toner
/ copier-machine type of technology. Higher resolutions
are going to require film technologies. What is limiting
the increase from 300 dpi to 600 dpi is the printer memory
required to take advantage of the resolution when in graphics
mode. For example, 300 dpi would require about 1M of RAM
for a full 8-by-1l-inch page. 600 dpi would require about
4M. Add another .5M for software and another 1M to 2M for
fonts, and the memory requirements quickly become expensive.
