Inkjet printers have a long history, but only recently have they become popular. Inkjets struggle for identity, yet they remain popular in diverse niche markets. They have the resolution of a laser, but often the features of a dot-matrix printer. If you need large sheets of paper (16 inches wide) at 300 dpi, your only choice is an inkjet printer.

The speed of inkjet printers places them in the dot-matrix category. Some-times, inkjets are sold like a dot-matrix printer with an inkjet head; some-times, they are sold with a great deal of memory like a laser printer. Inkjet printers range in cost from $200 to 53,000. The inkjet is probably the lightest, smallest, portable printer. One of the fanciest printers on the market is an inkjet it produces raised ink the kind of ink that mounds up on the paper. Because of the past failures of inkjets, much of society has a bad impression of these printers. This reputation prevents inkjets from directly competing with dot-matrix printers.
